UPDATED: Shambhala safe from evacuation alert for now

An evacuation alert remains in place for 23 properties due to a wildfire 20 kilometres southwest of Salmo.

The fire in the McCormick Creek/Pend d’Oreille area was burning at 75 hectares last night but limited visibility has hampered any further assessments of the blaze.

BC Wildfire Service has confirmed the fire remains on the south side of the Salmo River.

Regional District of Central Kootenay information officer Deb Burnett says the area for the evacuation alert has not changed since being issued yesterday.

The Shambhala Music Festival could be threatened if the fire expands but that area is not under an evacuation alert right now.

The RDCK is working with festival organizers and the RCMP in case an evacuation is necessary.
