MV Balfour replacement not imminent

A replacement for the MV Balfour is still years away.

The Balfour is the smaller of the two boats on the Kootenay Lake ferry run.

It’s also had the longest career of any vessel on the lake: it was launched in 1954.

The Ministry of Transportation announced last fall that the ferry’s western terminal would stay put and part of that decision meant building a new ferry to replace the Balfour.

But the ministry tells us the old boat still has a few years left and a decision isn’t imminent.

It says further technical studies and environmental analyses are underway to retain the existing terminal.

It added that the public will be consulted.
