Water advisory continued for Erickson

The Regional District of Central Kootenay says a water quality advisory issued July 29 for the Erickson water system remains in effect as a precaution.

Water sampling of the open treated water storage reservoir indicates the continued presence of low levels of coliform and E. coli bacteria. Water sampling in the distribution system, including the nearest home, indicates water quality is good.

The Arrow Creek water treatment plant operates 24 hours a day and water in the distribution system is blended with a small amount of water from the open storage reservoir during periods of high water demand. This blended water appears to have good chlorine residual which should result in bacteriological disinfection. The water quality advisory doesn’t apply to the Town of Creston as chlorine residuals are good entering the town supply and there is good chlorine contact time for disinfection to all town customers.

While health risks are considered low, the RDCK recommends that children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice. For these at-risk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute.

The RDCK is taking measures to reduce risk including addition of sodium hypochlorite to the open reservoir as required and ongoing water sampling and testing. In order to rescind the water quality advisory, several consecutive test results must indicate no presence of coliform bacteria or E. coli bacteria.
