A teacher at Crawford Bay school who went on a hike near Kokanee Springs golf course Monday and didn’t return remains missing.
Searchers are trying again today to find Alvin Dunic, 57.
RCMP say he left the school shortly before noon Monday to look for a suitable location for a class project. He was expected to return at 12:30 p.m.
Police were alerted at 2:45 p.m. Co-workers found his unlocked vehicle on Woolgar Rd. at the Crawford Creek trail head.
Creston RCMP activated Nelson Search and Rescue along with a police service dog from Nelson, RCMP air services, and swift water rescue technicians. They weren’t able to find him.
Dunic is described as five-foot-ten, medium build, balding, and was last seen wearing a light coloured short sleeve shirt, khaki shorts and loafers.
RCMP are asking people to stay out of the area and not to join in the search because they don’t want to contaminate any possible tracks for search dogs or evidence that might help find Dunic.
Although the school district declined an interview request, superintendent Jeff Jones issued a statement saying they have activated their community violence threat risk assessment team to determine what support is needed.
He said counselling supports and additional staff have been made available at the school for students, staff, Dunic’s family and the community.
“We recognize that many community members would like to help with the search for Mr. Dunic but would encourage the community to respect the request of the RCMP at this time,” Jeff Jones wrote.
