Maternal pen planned for South Selkirk caribou

A new enclosure has been built to protect young South Selkirk mountain caribou from predators.

The maternal pen has been installed in the Porcupine Creek drainage within the Darkwoods conservation area.

Fish and wildlife section head Holger Bohm says pregnant cows will be moved into the pen next spring.

Similar pens exist near Revelstoke and Chetwynd but they’ve been criticized by the Valhalla Wilderness Society.

They say they haven’t improved outcomes.
