WATER DATA CONFERENCE COMING TO INVERMERE

Living Lakes Canada wants to educate local communities about our water sources.

In partnership with Columbia Basin Trust, the Columbia Basin Watershed Network and Selkirk College, Living Lakes will be hosting Cracking the Code: A Water Hub Dialogue.

The conference will address the gaps in water data identified in a report put out by Columbia Basin Trust earlier this year.

Living Lakes Canada Executive Director Kat Hartwig says filling these gaps in knowledge are crucial in moving forward with water monitoring.

“We’re a little bit data deficit in terms of being able to make informed decisions around water allocation when we have climate change pressures that create drought and flooding events.”

She went on to say that climate modeling is predicting melting glaciers which will affect the flow of water.

The conference has almost 30 guest speakers from all over North America to discuss what the government, large companies and local communities can learn about changes in water flow and storing water data.

Hartwig says it will also include some workshops, “the idea is that we want to get working groups together at the end of theconference so we can move forward into building a collective water monitoring framework for the Columbia Basin.”

Cracking the Code takes place in Invermere November 29 and 30th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.
