Kootenay unemployment rate 7.5% in November

The employment situation in our area has brightened a bit from this time last year.

Statistics Canada says the Kootenay unemployment rate last month was 7.5 per cent, down from 8.9 per cent in November 2016.

But that’s still the second-highest in BC next to the Thompson-Okanagan.

Over 69,000 people in the Kootenays had jobs (up about 900) while another 5,600 were looking for work (down about 1,100).

The BC rate of 4.7 per cent was down from 5.7 per cent a year ago.

The national rate of 5.9 per cent was the lowest since 2008.
