Grant to Ktunaxa will help fill gaps in justice system

The Ktunaxa Nation Council is working to create a culturally appropriate Aboriginal justice system.

The Columbia Basin Trust has awarded the nation just over $114,000 as part of a larger grant to several social programs.

Social investment administrator Shannon Girling-Hebert says they will use the grant money to start work on filling gaps in the justice system.

She says too many people in the Aboriginal community are falling through the cracks.

Girling-Hebert says they’ve completed a needs assessment and the grant allows the council to move forward with the program.

She says the grant will change the way the community works with the justice system.

Planning for the project begins in the new year.

The Ktunaxa Nation is one of sixteen groups that has been awarded a grant.
