Participation in BC snowmobiling clubs is dwindling

The president of Creston’s Kokanee Country Snowmobile Club is worried about low membership.

Trish Drinkle says snowmobile clubs around the province work with the government in conservation efforts, including the preservation of the South and Central Mountain Caribou.

She says clubs have a voice with the provincial government when it comes to trail closures.

She adds lack of participation in the clubs can lead to lack of compliance.

Only 17% of snowmobilers are associated with clubs.

Drinkle worries the low number will negatively affect how they are viewed and adversely impact the sport for future generations.

The province has closed snowmobile trails in the past in an effort to preserve the mountain caribou.
