Proposed Creston Education Centre Closure has some residents worried

Around 30 parents gathered at the Creston Education Centre on Friday to voice their disappointment about the proposed closure of the facility.

Kootenay Lake School Board Superintendent Christine Perkins, Secretary-Treasurer Kim Morris, and Board Trustees Rebecca Huscroft and Heather Suttie were there to answer questions.

Some concerns that were voiced included separating Homelinks, Wildflower and the other programs that might result in a loss of community within the Centre.  As well some parents felt the process of the closure wasn’t made public enough.

Homelinks Parent Advisory Committee President Barbara Koehoorn says she likes the growth she’s seen of all the programs that are housed in the facility.

SD8 is in the third iteration of where to move everyone after receiving community feedback.

Superintendent Perkins says a final decision will be announced on Monday.

The school district announced they planned to officially close the centre in June after almost four years of discussion.

They looked for community partners to take over the title of the building in 2016.  After putting out an expression of interest that same year no official proposals were seen.

Board Trustee Rebecca Huscroft says the schools in the area are very open to including the programs that are set to be moved.

Representatives from the Regional District of Central Kootenay and Valley Community services, two groups that worked to prevent the closure, were not present at the meeting.
