Fifth meeting of Fire Hall Advisory Select Committee hears more from FireWise Consulting

The Fire Hall Advisory Select Committee (ASC) continued discussions with FireWise Consulting Ltd. at their fifth meeting.

The majority of the meeting was spent asking questions about the 19 recommendations for the hall. The committee established that: the Town of Creston has a responsibility to prioritize legislated and safety aspects of fire protection. As well Worksafe BC issues orders primarily to those organizations that do not voluntarily address workplace safety issues.

The ASC will revisit the Fire Hall spatial analysis drafted by the town in 2017 to consider revisions which may be more cost effective than initiating a new analysis and they will continue to review the reports recommendations.

FireWise Consultant Ernie Polsom says there was good discussion around the content of the report.

He says his next steps are to provide support to put together an interim plan.

The Committee offered three key ideas following the discussion:

  • The ASC looks forward to the construction of a new Fire Hall to serve Creston and the Creston Valley
  • Creston Fire Rescue is currently in the process of implementing short-term and interim measures recommended by FireWise, including the relocation of full-time fire department staff from the Fire Hall to Town Hall.
  • The ASC accepts both the FireWise interim measures report and an accompanying industrial hygienist review as supporting documentation and as grounds to move forward.
