Kootenay-Columbia Discovery Centre Society gearing up for summer education programs

The Kootenay-Columbia Discovery Centre Society is starting up their education programs.

The society took over delivery of the education programs from the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Authority earlier this year thanks to funding from the Columbia Basin Trust, the CVWMA, the province of BC and others. They’ll be operating out of a temporary facility in the Wildlife Interpretation Centre parking lot. Senior Manager Carla Ahern says KCDCS is looking at long-term options for a new ‘Discovery’ Centre.

She says the centre will have displays and information similar to the previous ‘Discovery’ Centre.

Chair of KCDCS James Posynick says, ‘KCDCS is very excited about our role in environmental education and in developing a modern facility that will showcase the wetlands, be a gateway to the Kootenay-Columbia’s natural resources and enhance economic opportunities throughout the region.’

He adds, ‘Our confidence in the continuing success of programs is hugely bolstered by the retention of Carla Ahern as our Senior Manager. We could not be more pleased than to work with and learn from Carla as we move forward.

Ahern has worked with the CVWMA for ten years and says she’s excited to continue her work with KCDCS. The discovery society opens in May and they’re already booking up for their school tours in May and June.

Programs at the wetlands run until October.
