Trail awards $12 million bridge contract

After a whirlwind week of regional negotiations and with the province Trail city council has decided to award the contract for construction of the pipeline/pedestrian bridge over the Columbia River.

Graham Infrastructure LP will handle the job valued at $12.2 million. There is also over $2 million in design and engineering costs.

More details will be provided at a public consultation meeting on Thursday.

Speaking after a special council meeting late Friday Trail Mayor Mike Martin says the contract has been awarded with some conditions.

Those conditions include reasonable public consultation by the three municipalities of Trail, Rossland and Warfield.

These partners will need to borrow $3 million more than anticipated – for a total of $7.2 million – to pay for the sewer pipe portion. This will involve tax increases.

Trail alone will also pay another $7.5 million for the walkway portion.

The location and time for Thursday’s public consultation meeting in Trail had yet to be determined following Friday’s special meeting.
