Nelson police say they and the conservation office had to kill a bear in the Fairview neighborhood Friday afternoon.
The animal had been spotted about 40 feet up a tree and was showing signs of stress.
The bear had been up there for 7 hours when police were called and it was reported that the animal had become a problem by frequenting the area.
Police say residents must ensure attractants are properly secured and disposed of.
There is a shortage of natural food sources for bears this year and they are seeking alternatives.
