Why demolish Nelson market shelters now?

Some people in Nelson are unhappy with the lack of communication from the city about the future of the Cottonwood Falls Park market site.

The city will tear down the market shelters soon.

That’s in part because the park has become less attractive to families and the wider community with concerns over transient people sleeping there or other activities that make people feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

John Alton – who used to manage the Farmer’s market- says he and others are confused.

He’s asking the city to hold off on taking the shelters down until a proper plan is in place for the future of that area.

The West Kootenay Eco Society -which runs the market – says at the very least temporary shelters will be in place for next season.
