Fuel mitigation program sparks changes in the Emergency Management Program

Town of Creston officials met with other RDCK municipalities in Whistler last weekend to discuss changes to the Emergency Management Program.
Bylaw 2639, 2018 would focus on wildfire fuel mitigation. This encompasses the clearing of potential hazardous fuels such as brush or other materials that could exacerbate wildfires in the region.
The town of Creston has not received an overview of the program, including specific future deliverables, financial implications or strategic priorities from the RDCK.
Castlegar, Nelson and Creston would all consider participation, but only if changes are made.
Mayor Toyota explains.
“You have the three largest municipalities in the RDCK who are saying NO to participating in the Emergency Management Program as it is written now. But are very interested in maintaining membership if they are are willing to listen to us.”
Creston’s town council voted unanimously on September 4th, 2018 not to participate in the fuel mitigation bylaw until their needs are met.
