South Rural School Trustee: Rebecca Huscroft

Rebecca Huscroft is one of two incumbent school trustees hoping to be re-elected in the South Rural Zone.
Huscroft says in the last seven years as trustee, she’s earned her role by having an open mind, being unbiased and listening to her constituents.
Challenger for one of the seats, Al Gribbin criticizes Huscroft for her support of the sale of the Creston Education Centre, however Huscroft stands by her views.
“I’m not completely invested in buildings. I’m completely invested in students and programming, and to me it’s like a family. You family is getting smaller, your house is too big and it’s costing you a fortune to keep it heated and lit and you’re falling behind in maintenance… Does your family fall apart when you move to a smaller home that meets your needs? In my opinion, it doesn’t.”
She says she believes in keeping programs open for children across the valley and that the remaining facilities have ample room to host them.
Huscroft also says it’s important to stay ahead when it comes to adopting a new curriculum and notes BC’s top rank in Canada when it comes to literacy and sciences.
Another issue hitting schools is SOGI 123 and the inclusion of  those who do not identify with regular gender norms or sexual orientation. Huscroft shares her stance on the matter.
“It doesn’t matter what your sexual orientation or what your gender orientation is. Or what religion or ethnic background you come from. In my opinion, you need to be fully supported and included in a nurturing environment.”
Only two seats are available for the role of school trustee in the South Rural Area. Huscroft aims to keep hers.
