South Rural School Trustee Candidate: Al Gribbin

Twenty seven years of teaching, twenty of those years at Prince Charles Secondary, many former students recognize the name Al Gribbin.
Running for School Trustee, he says he understands that many students wish to pursue fields of education that relate to farming and other industrial endeavors.
In terms of inclusion and the SOGI 123 debate, Gribbin says it must be hard to have an ambiguous sexuality and have to hide it in fear of persecution. Something he says doesn’t belong in schools.
“I think we have to be welcoming, open and accommodating to all the students and I think that our schools are an excellent place to start that process of openness and accommodation.”
He says his main concern is that of the students and families who are now facing the closure and selling of some of their facilities, notably the Creston Education Centre which has been sold to the town of Creston. Gribbin says Rebecca Huscroft’s support of the purchase does not bode well for students.
He explains that the deal the School district struck with the town is for only 5 years, leaving the CEC in a tough situation down the road.
“The Town of Creston will have a big white elephant that they have to support over the years. Yea, they’re getting money from the Columbia Basin Trust to help pay for that but, you know, in ten years time if they do not have students in that building, they are going to be paying for this massive facility that is non-operational.”
There are only two seats and three candidates running for trustee in the South Rural Zone including Rebecca Huscroft and Cody Beebe. Al Gribbin hopes to unseat one of them.
