Nelway border crossing hours reduced

The Nelway and Carson border crossings will reduce their hours as of Nov. 26.

They’ll be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. rather than 8 a.m. to midnight.

“It’s a result of operational requirements and decreasing traffic volumes during the evening hours at Nelway and Carson,” says Alan Profili, chief of Border Services operations for the Okanagan and Kootenay.

“This change will also mirror the US Customs and Border Protection hours, which will allow for more efficient and effective use of our resources.”

The Metaline Falls and Danville crossings on the U.S. side changed their hours on Oct. 1.

“We could have different hours depending on our operational requirements and the service needs of the community,” Profili says. “At other ports across the country the hours do differ. For these two ports in particular, the best decision as to match hours.”

The US agency originally proposed closing the Danville side at 5 p.m. for nine months per year, but modified the proposal based on a public outcry.
