LKB Chief calls referendum historic event

The approval of a land deal between the Lower Kootenay Band and RDCK is being called a “historic event”.

The referendum passed unanimously last week and sees the Band surrendering 22 acres of land to the RDCK in exchange for a 475 acre parcel on the south arm of Kootenay Lake.

Chief Jason Louie says he has mixed emotions on the resolution.

Louie says he is grateful for the support from past and present elders in this 20 year process.

The Band has been absent from direct access to Kootenay Lake since the late 1800’s, when the reserve system was implemented.
