Creston Welcomes a new batch of volunteer firefighters

Fresh out of Training and carefully selected, Creston has a new group of volunteer Firefighters.

The fresh recruits, all from Ontario, came to visit the mycrestonnow.com newsroom and expressed their excitement to be doing what they love.

Fire Chief Jared Riel introduced his latest participants of the work experience program in council on Tuesday.

Not an easy process, Hannah Bailey from Southern Ontario said how selective the program is.

“We all went to fire school, we all completed our 1001 and 1002 for the NFPA standards, and we had to apply through the application process. It’s 1 of 5 Canadians that get accepted into the program.”

When asked about why they chose this profession, Vincent Cassette said firefighting is in his genes.

“Personally, I have some firefighters in my family. My father was a paramedic so helping the community is just in my genes. I’ve been working in a hospital but I kinda needed a change in career. I wanted to be more involved and I decided to go into firefighting and I’ve been loving it ever since.”

Not just a firefighter, Trevor Lee expressed his interest in helping the community.

“Right now we’re just getting settled in, but I want to help out with youth hockey, I did some minor league coaching back home.”

For Dezember Treleaven, who’s been in in the program for almost a year says the firefighter lifestyle is more than a job, it’s a second family.

“Growing up, I’ve always wanted to help others. I’ve always had that second family and when I lost that in gymnastics, I wanted to find that somewhere else. So that’s what lead me to the fire service.”

At the end of the day, these individuals are here for a purpose and that is to keep the community safe.

Hannah Bailey puts it best.

“To me personally, being a firefighter mean to help people on their worst day. So just being there, being able to support them and doing whatever I can is very important to me.”
