Creston Valley Gleaners are looking for Volunteers

The Creston Valley Gleaners are looking for volunteers to join their ranks.

The only self-funded food bank in all of Canada relies on volunteers to handle clothing donations and sort through, clean and itemize what is eventually re-sold to people all over the Kootenays from their 807 Canton Street Storefront.

Head of Public Relations and Recruiting, Elaine Keeling says the majority of volunteers are retirees. She’s looking for more to cover four hours shifts in the sorting and sales departments.

“This is the area we need people the most right now. This is where we’re hanging out clothes constantly, checking and re-checking, making sure they are good. Helping with the sales aspect of things. It takes a little while to get used to it but it’s really, very rewarding.”

Keeling says volunteers often take time off, not only for their own health but also to care for their loved ones.

Friendships are also formed between volunteers according to Keeling.

“There’s a comradery among people that do work at Gleaners and we know that what we do makes a difference.”

Just last year the Creston Valley Gleaners Society surpassed the $1-million mark in terms of giving back to the community.
