Ammonia levels safe at Columbia Brewery

Following the triggered alarms for high ammonia levels at the Columbia Brewery on January 24, workers found that levels were normal. Creston Fire Chief Jared Riel says his department helped with inspection efforts, which included an evacuation as a safety precaution.

“We took our time, came up with a good plan and made sure we were set up properly to decontaminate any of the workers who would enter the area with their PPE (Personal Protective Equipment),” Riel explained. “Once they went in, they had zero readings in the areas where the alarm had gone off. So we were kind of unsure as to what the problem was.”

According to Chief Riel,  ammonia detectors were placed in strategic places in and around the brewery as well as the surrounding neighbourhoods to ensure public safety. The Town of Creston, RCMP and Regional District of Central Kootenay also activated the local emergency operations centre (EOC) in the event of an incident escalation.  No levels of ammonia were found.

At the time this was published, there was no official statement from the Columbia Brewery; however, a source involved with the incident says the triggered alarm was likely an error.
