Farmers are invited to work with wildfire response teams

Agricultural producers are invited to a free event covering wildfire mitigation planning, which could greatly reduce the risk of loss during a wildfire.

RDCK Wildfire Specialist and Assistant Fire Chief in Kaslo Kevin Smith says the event will bring officials, experts and farmers together review the main risks and how to combat them.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for agricultural producers to become informed about a great new initiative that really provides an innovative tool for them to work in conjunction with wildfire response services. To provide their property (with) the optimal amount of protection that we can.”

According to Smith, the RDCK and partners have developed a three part workbook that covers what to to before, during and after a wildfire. The event will also cover ways to protect farmland and livestock by making improvements to property and making smart choices in building materials.

“As well as within the workshop we have an extensive FireSmart segment,” Smith explains. “So we’ll get people brought up to the latest level of understanding around the considerations for how to prevent structure loss in a wildfire event.”

The seminar runs from 9:00 until 3:00 p.m at the Creston and District Community Complex on February 28th.

Pre-registration begins at 8:30 a.m and a free lunch will be provided.
