More safe housing for women needed

Nelson has services when women need refuge, but they aren’t enough.

Over 100 women and children were turned away from the local transition house last year even though over 160 were provided for.

Ann Harvey with the local committee on homelessness, says there is a constant push to secure more emergency shelter for women.

Nelson’s vacancy rates are very low and there are hardly any three bedroom affordable rental units.

The theme for this year’s homelessness action week is “Safe Housing For Women” .

It comes on the 20th anniversary of the murder of Nelson’s Aimee Beaulieu and her two small children, after which the local transition housing is named.
