Gas leak forced evacuation on Canyon Street

Downtown Creston was back to normal around 2:30 pm on Thursday after a gas leak closed Canyon Street at 11th Avenue.

Creston Fire and Rescue Services issued an evacuation for the area and surrounding businesses at approximately 2:00 pm. A delivery truck accidentally hit the gas metre behind the Golden Flower Bakery, explained Acting Assistant Fire Chief Randall Fabbro.

“Crews were able to to shut off the gas line coming out from the ground there with hand lines, with protection lines and we were able to contain the gas right away.”

Once contained, crews paid a visit to each business to ensure public safety.

“Each business is being cleared with a gas detector and will return to regular business once they’re cleared.”

No one was reportedly injured.
