One hundred years of Lister will be celebrated starting June 7 for the weekend at Lister Deer Lodge Park.
The Centennial will have catering, live music, a family dance on Saturday and the famous plane drop according to local, Ken Sommerfeld.
“We have a plane that will fly over and drop coated ping pong balls and the kids bring them in and they get a prize.”
The Lions Club will be hosting a pancake breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday while activities are planned all weekend long. Sommerfeld will be emceeing the event. Born in the 50’s his Grandparents helped shape Lister.
“I’m going to acknowledge and call out some of the descendants of some of the original settler families or settlers through the “teens”, the 20’s, the 30’s and the 40’s. Because a lot of them still live here.”
His family is one of the bunch who helped Colonel Fred Lister turn his refuge for World War 1 veterans into a town.
With only one well and poor conditions for orchards, the camp struggled before water was sourced and land was cleared for more successful crops like alfalfa, as opposed to the orchards which thrive only a few kilometres away.
