It’s picking season for Harvest Share

Households with an overabundance of fruit on their trees have a solution in the Creston Valley.

It’s called Harvest Share.

The not for profit is looking for volunteers and houses to participate says Coordinator Dennis Charles.

“What we do is we go out and pick fruit with volunteers and at the end of the day, the volunteers get some. The people who own the Trees get some and we distribute the rest to the community and to anyone who is at a disadvantage. We take fresh produce to places like the food bank, the women’s shelter, assisted living facilities, low income families and single parent homes.”

According to Charles the organization hosted 77 picking events in 2018. Participants included homes with fruit trees in their back yards and some commercial properties. Harvest share continues to give even later in the season depending on the fruit or nut.

“Walnuts are the last thing, and we save the walnuts and give them out with the Christmas hampers at Christmas time. So it’s nice for Harvest share to still be giving in December when there’s not much growing.”

Locals in the Creston Valley who wish to volunteer or set up a picking event at their property may follow this link to the Harvest Share website.
