Nelson cop to be awarded

A Nelson police officer will receive a Lieutenant Governor’s award next month but he regards it as an honor for the entire department.

Detective Constable David Laing saved the life of a troubled woman two years ago as she tried to jump off the orange bridge.

He says he and his colleagues are dealing with people all the time who need help in their struggles with mental health, drugs and alcohol.

Laing sustained a knee injury in the rescue of the woman as it was wedged up against the steel railing.

Members of the public came to his aid as he held on to the woman.
