Nelson council says “no” to free wi-fi

Nelson Council is not rushing to accept an offer of free public wi-fi, and that wasn’t what the mayor expected.

Shaw is offering to instal the costly infrastructure and have free service for all users at various public buildings and spaces.

This can help create a so called connected intelligent community and attract visitors.

But as a surprised Mayor Deb Kozak explains her council isn’t comfortable with it.

Some councillors suggested parks are for recreation and rest, not wifi.

But Kozak says it’s not the role of councillors to dictate what people can do in their leisure time .

And as council waits to see if the shaw offer can be tweaked she says she wants to hear what the community has to say about the offer.
