Nelson remembers

It was a fitting local tribute on Remembrance Day yesterday to all who have served, and to the poem which has become an emotive symbol of the occasion.

“In Flanders Fields ” was written by a Canadian soldier one hundred years ago during the first world war.

Nelson’s Lionel Binetteis only four years younger than the poem, he is now 96 year’s old.

He has been reciting it at the Nelson event for many years.

Binnette is a veteran of the second world war and was part of a team that rescued downed pilots.

As with many of the events across our region yesterday hundreds of people showed up at the Nelson Cenotaph.
