Creston families have a chance to learn the importance of bicycle safety this Saturday at the bicycle rodeo.
It will be at the Creston and District Community Complex and will see RCMP officers, fire department personnel, and RDCK representatives in attendance to help children learn how to stay safe on bikes.
Cst. Brett Urano says it will be a perfect opportunity to get children started on bikes.
“Kids will be able to do obstacle courses. I believe that there will be some certificates handed out by our constable, Connor Walchuck, who will be attending and running and running the RCMP side of the bike rodeo with bike safety, making sure helmets fit properly.”
He says now that the weather is starting to get sunny and beautiful, more people are pulling out their bikes.
However, even if it’s rainy and overcast on Saturday, the rodeo will still take place indoors at the rec centre.
He adds one of the most important lessons to take away is the necessity of helmets.
“A helmet is what’s really the only protection you have on a bicycle. If you’re not wearing a helmet, you’re more likely to suffer a traumatic head injury and those can often have life-altering or be fatal in some cases. You always have to make sure you’re safe on a bike.”
Urano, having participated in the Cops for Kids ride last year and with plans to do so again in 2023, says he always wears his helmet.
“I’m on my bicycle all the time. And I would never ride it without a helmet because it’s really the only protection I have amongst the other billion things on the road that I could have some type of collision with.”
He says it will be the perfect way to spend a Saturday morning in Creston.
“It’ll be a great time for all of those who show up, parents and children and families or just individuals who want to learn more about bike safety.”
