Creston by-election announced for two council seats

A by-election has been announced to fill two seats on Creston town council.

Valley citizens can head to the polls on Mar. 16 from 8 am to 8 pm at Rotacrest Hall. Advance voting will take place on Mar. 6 and 13.

Mayor Arnold DeBoon says there will be a nomination period from Jan. 30 to Feb. 9, where candidates should come and get the nomination packages and complete their nominations.

“We want people that are team players, first of all, people that are community-minded and people that have strong interpersonal skills, because those are the type of things that make a good counselor,” said DeBoon.

With two new councilors potentially coming to the table, DeBoon says he is looking forward to the new perspective they can provide.

“in our last election, almost everybody was new to council. We had a couple that had been elected in the by-election, and, of course, Councillor Elford, who had been there for eight years. And so now we will have almost everybody with two or fewer years of experience, and, of course, the new ones will have zero. So it will be a new council with probably some new perspective on things.”

DeBoon encourages voters to head to the polls.

“I really encourage people to come out and vote because by-elections especially have a reputation of not getting a big voter turnout. I think it’s important for people to go vote in these elections because this is part of their future.”
