Creston Valley Shrine Club raises funds for children hospitals

The Creston Valley Shrine Club has been busy raising funds for Shriners hospitals in the system to provide services to children.

There are 22 hospitals in North America, where children receive treatment and travel expenses are covered for them and their families.

Tony Mulder with Creston’s club says the closest Shriners hospital is just across the border in Spokane.

“The club gives away popcorn and, in return, the Creston residents donate to the hospital by eating the popcorn and enjoying it. The club itself provides for the travel for the family to Spokane or any other hospital, but mostly they travel to Spokane. That would include mom and dad and grandma and the siblings, they all receive, um travel expenses for motels, gas, and food at the hospital in Spokane.”

Those attending most events in Creston will be able to see the Shriners club providing their popcorn.

Most recently, they were spotted at the Canada Day Colour Run.

“We go to fun events, like going to a parade and selling popcorn,” said Mulder.

“We also do an annual ice fishing derby at Mawson Lake. The club enjoys having fun meeting with the public and raising funds for the hospitals.”

The Shriners Hospital in Spokane is celebrating 100 years this upcoming September.

“The hospital is located in downtown Spokane,” said Mulder. “It has a staff of about 215 and they handle about 1,500 patients per month. It’s primarily a bone hospital, so it does mainly prosthetics.”
