SD8 names new principal for Salmo Elementary

School District 8 has appointed a new principal for Salmo Elementary School.

Mr. Roman Wyllie will take over from current principal Rod Giles, who is retiring at the end of the school year.

“I am pleased to welcome Vice-principal Wyllie into his new role as school principal. He brings strong experience in the classroom and as a school leader, along with a clear commitment to student well-being,” said Superintendent Trish Smillie in a release.

“I am confident that Salmo families will find his warmth, enthusiasm and expertise a great asset to the school and to the community.”

The school district said Wyllie brings years of experience as an educator across the province, including work as an adjunct professor with the University of British Columbia West Kootenay Teacher Education Program and teaching in several school districts across B.C.

He began his teaching career in SD8 as a practicum teacher at L.V. Rogers Secondary School in 2014 before returning to the district in 2023 as vice-principal at L.V. Rogers, a position he has held for the past three years.

He will take on his new role at Salmo Elementary School beginning Aug. 1.

“I wish Principal Giles a wonderful retirement and thank him deeply for more than 45 years of service to children, families, staff and communities as an educator and school leader,” said Superintendent Smillie.
