RDCK to test emergency alert system this week

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) will test its emergency notification system on Thursday as part of Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs May 3 to 9.

This year, the theme for the national campaign is In It Together, which the RDCK said highlights how social connection can strengthen readiness.

The annual test is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, at about 2 p.m., at which point anyone registered with the RDCK’s Emergency Notification System will receive a test notification by text, email, landline or through the Voyent Alert! app, depending on user settings.

The Province of B.C. will conduct a separate test of its notification system on May 6 at 1:55 p.m. PT.

“Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility,” RDCK acting emergency program manager Nora Hannon said in a news release. “By working together, we can build resilience towards the emergencies that impact our communities.”

Those who are new to the area or who have not yet signed up for emergency notifications are urged to do so on the RDCK’s website. Existing users are also encouraged to log in and confirm their location details are up to date to ensure they receive relevant information.

Additionally, residents are being reminded to take time during the week to review their emergency readiness, including making or updating a grab-and-go kit, developing a home emergency plan and checking in with neighbours.
