Southern Interior resurfacing program includes major Highway 3 work in Kootenays

A major Highway 3 resurfacing project through the Kootenay region is among a series of road improvements planned across B.C.’s southern Interior in 2026.

Approximately 28 kilometres of Highway 3 will be repaved from the east side of Kootenay Pass to Summit Creek Bridge, along with side roads in the Wynndel area. Okanagan Aggregates Ltd. has been awarded an $11.7-million contract for the project, which is expected to be completed by October 2026.

The Highway 3 work is part of a broader provincial resurfacing program that includes several projects in the Kootenay region.

Other projects scheduled for 2026 include:

  • Highway 3 from Elko to Fernie, with resurfacing of intermittent sections covering 10.2 kilometres.
  • Highway 3 from Paulson Brake Check to Sheep Creek Chain Up, as well as Robson-area side roads, covering 30.2 kilometres.
  • Highway 1 from Quartz to Glacier, including Golden-area side roads, covering 31.5 kilometres.

The province said more than $136 million will be invested in resurfacing highways and local roads throughout the southern Interior in 2026.

The projects are intended to maintain key transportation corridors and improve road conditions for residents, commercial traffic and travellers.

Drivers are reminded to obey construction-zone speed limits and follow the directions of traffic-control personnel. Information about road conditions, delays and closures is available through DriveBC at www.drivebc.ca.
