Longtime firefighter appointed interim chief in Creston

The Creston Valley Fire Department has a new interim leader.

Longtime firefighter Laura Dodman has been appointed interim fire chief following the departure of Jared Riel.

The Town of Creston said in a press release that Dodman has served with the Creston Valley Fire Department since 1998, starting as a paid-on-call firefighter before advancing through the ranks as lieutenant, captain and, most recently, assistant chief.

“With extensive experience in emergency response, firefighter training, and department operations, Laura brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to her role as Interim Fire Chief,” the town said, adding that there will be no changes to service levels, operations or emergency response capabilities as a result of the leadership change.

Riel also served as the town’s director of protective services. The town said it will begin recruiting for that position in the coming weeks.

The senior management position oversees the Creston Valley Fire Department, including its three rural fire stations in Wynndel, Canyon and West Creston, as well as Emergency Management Creston and the town’s climate readiness and community resilience initiatives.
