Creston landfill to close one hour earlier beginning Aug. 1

The Creston landfill will reduce its operating hours next month as the Regional District of Central Kootenay looks to lower operating costs.

Starting Aug. 1, the landfill at 1501 Mallory Rd. will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, one hour earlier than its current schedule.

The RDCK said the change follows direction from its September 2025 board meeting, where directors asked staff to identify ways to prevent or reduce tax increases.

The earlier closing time is expected to save about $29,000 annually.

The district said traffic data collected in 2024 and 2025 showed about 90 per cent of commercial and residential customers visited the landfill between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The site averaged about 0.5 commercial vehicles and 12 residential customers between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. each day.

The RDCK also considered closing the landfill an additional day each week but found there was no consistently slower day based on transaction data. It said a 3 p.m. closing would have the least impact on customers.

Residents and commercial customers are encouraged to arrive by 2:45 p.m. to allow enough time to weigh in and unload before the facility closes.
