Two dead in suspected grizzly bear attack near Bella Coola

The B.C. Conservation Officer Service has ended its search near Bella Coola after the second victim of a suspected grizzly bear attack was found dead.

Inspector Jeff Tyre with the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) said the victim was found Tuesday afternoon near the Snooka West Trail, with efforts by conservation officers and the RCMP.

“Throughout, our priorities were to secure the area and protect officers and first responders as they searched for the missing person, then respectfully recover the deceased so she could be brought home to her family,” Tyre said in a statement on social media.

“We extend our deepest condolences to both families. We remain committed to supporting them as our investigation continues.”

Inspector Tyre said it is not clear whether more than one bear was involved, and officers continue working to locate and capture any bears in the area.

“If it is determined that a bear is involved in the attack, it will be dispatched in accordance with provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.”

The public is being urged to stay away from Snooka West Trail area for their safety and to leave the work to conservation officers and police.

The BCCOS remains in contact with the Nuxalk First Nation, community members, and law enforcement and emergency response partners.

CBC has identified the victims as Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, by family members.

Jennifer Balcarras was found deceased by BCCOS on Monday.
