UPDATE:Rock Creek Wildfire grows to 2,000 hectares

The serious wildfire that forced the evacuation of hundreds of people in and around Rock Creek Thursday night has spread rapidly.

It was estimated at up to 2,000 hectares early Friday after being reported around 1 pm Thursday.

Highway 3 and Highway 33 remain closed with no detours.

Fanny Bernard with the South East Fire Centre says despite the continued efforts of air tankers and ground crews, the fire quickly grew.

About 200 people were evacuated quickly from the nearby Kettle River Provincial campground.

And the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary has issued an evacuation order for 240 homes in the area.

36 wildfire crew worked throughout Thursday afternoon and 40 more moved in overnight.

A 20-person Sustained Action crew remained on site overnight to help with structure protection.
