The history of St Peter’s Church is an important factor in the decision to dismantle it.
The church was built in 1893 on a mission founded on the Ktunaxa reserve by Jesuit priest Father Nicolas Coccola.
The Jesuits were part of a centuries old effort to convert all the First Nations of Canada to Christianity.
Creston Museum Manager Tammy Bradford says the church is a part of that history.
The church is set to be dismantled by the Lower Kootenay Band.
Bradford says the impact the Jesuits affected First Nations all across Canada.
She says the church is a symbol of that repression.
A monument will be erected in place of the church once it has been dismantled.
