Lower Kootenay Band Chief says he’s not celebrating federal budget announcements

The Lower Kootenay Band Chief says Indigenous funding in the 2018 federal budget likely won’t have an affect on them.

Jason Louie says decisions about funding are frequently based on population size.

He says, ‘Ultimately the Lower Kootenay Band must create their own destiny while the Prime Minister directs their destination.’

The federal government announced a funding boost of 5 billion dollars in the budget for Indigenous services over the next five years.

This includes child welfare, health care and water and housing.

Louie says he’s been in his position long enough not to count on these announcements.

The Lower Kootenay Band is one of 600 bands in Canada with only 240 members.
