Machine readable Zones (MRZ) may become a standard feature on future Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) cards.
The pilot project launch will make it easier for Lower Kootenay Band members to cross the United States – Canadian border which cuts through the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation.
A community event will facilitate the SCIS intake on Frebruary 25, from 9:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m in the Lower Kootenay Band Boardroom.

Confirmed attendees include representatives from Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, US Customs and Border Protection, the Canadian Border Services Agency and Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie.
The objective is for the Government of Canada to work in partnership with First Nations and government agencies to address long-standing Canada-United States border crossing concerns.
