Creston recognizes Korean Armistice

Saturday marked the 71st anniversary of the signing of the Korean Armistice.

Creston recognized the anniversary with the laying of a wreath at the cenotaph and the lowering of the flags outside the legion.

Legion member Ian Currie says about 65 people who called Creston home at one point participated in the Korean War.

“We had a pretty good representation of people over there and Canada was the third largest contributor to personnel that were over there. We sent about 30,000 people. About 27,000 into the army and then roughly 3,000 sailors and airmen.”

Currie laid the wreath at the foot of the cenotaph and took a few moments to remember.

“I think anytime that you have people that risk their life to make things better for us we owe them that. I don’t think we say thank you enough anymore. I don’t think we give the recognition or the appreciation that we should.”

Currie says he’s aware of one Korean veteran left in Creston’s Legion membership.

“There is one Korean veteran left in the Legion membership. The average member would be or the average soldier in Korea would be about 92 or 93 now.”

The wreath stayed at the cenotaph for the entire day.
