PAWS and Peeps family fun day coming to Creston this weekend

Creston’s first PAWS and Peeps Family Fun Day kicks off this Saturday, October 5.

Hosted by the Creston Pet Adoption Welfare Society (PAWS), the event will be held at the Creston shelter at 2805 Lower Wynndel Road.

The theme of the event is to give back to the community, which PAWS volunteer Dallas Magrum says aligns with the organization’s mandate to provide community outreach and education.

“A lot of people don’t understand that we help people rehome their pets, and we assist in searching for lost pets by advertising on Facebook and Instagram, etc. One of the things we want to do here is to let the people of Creston and the surrounding areas know that PAWS is actually here and that this is a safe place for the animals.”

The event will feature kids’ games, live music, sing-alongs, a hot dog roast, door prizes, face painting, and a teddy bear clinic where kids can conduct a “checkup” on their bears.

Pet owners will also have the opportunity to learn basic dog training tips, animal facts, and participate in a tour of the PAWS shelter, among other activities.

“Basically, part of the idea here is to explain to adults and kids how we safely and humanely look after the animals to make them more adoptable, and how to pass along happy and responsible ownership to kids. We help them learn about responsible animal ownership by teaching them about leash training for dogs, how to sit and stay, heel, and roll over— that kind of thing.”

The festivities start at 11 a.m. and run until 2 p.m.
