Creston may REEP the rewards for energy efficiency

The Regional Energy Efficiency Program (REEP) paid a visit to Creston on May 2.

Roughly 15 residents attended the event aimed at educating locals about cost-saving steps and rebates to improve existing homes.

Trish Dehnel from the Community Energy Association provided information on how to build an efficient home from the ground up.

“Anybody building a new home, we’re going to be promoting how to start energy efficient from the beginning by working with an energy adviser, working through what we call the BC Energy Step Code, we also have a sustainability checklist.”

EcoSave Program’s Carmen Proctor had a display, illuminating the efficiency of halogen light bulbs versus its older and cheaper cousin. Though it’s only one step of many to improve energy costs in homes. She suggests booking an energy evaluation.

“Usually that costs $450. But if you sign up with our program you can get it for $165. You get access to rebates, which have all been increased. Plus we have a low-income program where you can get a lot of free things installed. that’s good for renters or people that own their own home.”

Town of Creston representatives were also in attendance,  including Mayor Ron Toyota, Councilor Ellen Tzakis and Manager of Engineering Colin Farynowski.
