Coroners Service to begin inquest into Creston man’s death

The BC Coroners Service will begin its inquest next month into the death of Linden Lyle Faulkner.

The 33-year-old Creston man died on Aug 28, 2018.

According to his obituary, Faulkner was born on Sept. 24, 1984 and is survived by his wife and three daughters.

“Linden is most remembered for his outgoing personality which gained him many friends everywhere he went,” said Faulkner’s obituary. “He was a kind and caring gentle giant with the ability to just enjoy life and laughter.”

A GoFundMe page set up in his honour said Faulkner was killed in a logging accident.

The fundraiser gathered over $40,000 in donations, well above its $10,000 goal.

B.C. government officials said proceedings will begin at 10 a.m. (Mountain time) on Oct. 16, at the Cranbrook Law Courts.

The coroners service said an inquest may be directed by the chief coroner when the public has an interest in being informed, and the death occurred from dangerous practice or circumstance and similar deaths could be prevented through recommendations.

An inquest may be used to gather information related to a person’s death, make recommendations meant to prevent similar deaths, and give the public confidence that the circumstances surrounding a person’s death are not overlooked, concealed or ignored, they added.

Presiding coroner Margaret Janzen will hear evidence from witnesses under oath before a jury which will then make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths. The jury must not make any findings of legal responsibility.
