Creston goes to the birds; Creston Valley Bird Festival fast approaches

Birders will be flocking to Creston for the annual Creston Valley Bird Festival.

With over 300 species of birds that migrate through or call Creston home, the valley is a hot spot for birdwatching, and every second weekend of May each year is filled with birdwatching activities.

This year, coordinator Ulrike Sliworsky says there will be a big turnout.

“We get visitors from all over coming to our festival. This year we have a couple from Belgium, California, and London, Ontario. We’ve had people from London, England here, as well. We have about 250 people coming this year.”

Bird tours will be held in the early morning, with birders searching for rare and beautiful species.

“Last year we counted 140 species on our festival weekend.”

And it’s not just the adults celebrating in the feathered fun.

“The kids have been really busy with the coloring contest. This has always held over at the Kokanee Ford with the people there. They post all the pictures all over their window.”

There is still some time to sign up for the Bird Festival, however, Sliworsky says the spots are filling up fast.

“We have 23 out of 47 events that are already sold out. But, there are still some tickets available for the Friday night banquet, which has some great door prizes with local donations and a couple of presentations that night
as well.”

There will be presentations held all day on Saturday at Rotacrest Hall.

“And on Sunday morning, which is Mother’s Day, what a great way to spend a day with your mom going bird watching. We have a couple of spots available for the early morning tours that day.”

There is plenty more to catch during the Creston Valley Bird Festival weekend. More information on how to sign up can be found on their website.
