Local softwood producers not seeking aid: Stetski

Many local sawmills don’t seem to have much use for an $867-million dollar federal softwood aid package.

It’s intended to offset new 27 per cent American tariffs.

But Kootenay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski says none of the mill owners he’s talked to have applied for it.

Stetski thinks the last two governments missed the boat by not renegotiating the softwood agreement sooner.

He says small mills favour a quota system rather than paying duties.
